Change the water
Every couple of days, even when the bowl is not empty. Moving water stays fresher than standing water, but it does not stay fresh indefinitely.
Weekly
Lift the pump out and rinse the bowl. A 304 stainless bowl takes warm soapy water and a soft cloth, nothing abrasive, which would scratch the finish and give film somewhere to sit.
The pump
Take it apart and clear the impeller. This is the part people skip, and a furred-up impeller is the usual reason a fountain gets noisy.
Filters
Swap the filter cotton and core when the flow slows or the water stops looking clear.
Charging
