Getting the size right.

Four sizes, with the manufacturer’s guidance on who each one suits:

  • S: 30 × 30 cm (11.8 × 11.8 in). Newborn puppies, crate corners, carrier bases.
  • M: 40 × 60 cm (15.7 × 23.6 in). Puppies and small dogs under 10 lb.
  • L: 70 × 80 cm (27.6 × 31.5 in). Dogs 10–30 lb.
  • XL: 80 × 90 cm (31.5 × 35.4 in). Dogs over 30 lb, or more than one pet.

Buy a size up from what looks necessary. Dogs aim for the middle and miss towards the edge, and the extra margin is what keeps it off your floor. Two pads in rotation is the practical minimum, one down, one in the wash.

Measurements are taken by hand and the manufacturer allows a small tolerance.

How to use it.

Put it down flat

Lay the pad with the anti-slip backing against the floor. Buy a size up from what looks necessary. Dogs aim for the middle and miss toward the edge.

Rinse cold first

Shake solids into the toilet and rinse under cold water. Cold, because hot water sets protein stains and smells into fabric instead of lifting them.

Wash without softener

Cool or warm cycle, mild detergent, never fabric softener. It coats the face and kills absorbency for good. Air dry, or tumble low at most.

Care & Cleaning

Before washing

Shake solids off into the toilet. Rinse the pad under cold water, cold, because hot water sets protein stains and smells into fabric rather than lifting them.

Washing

The manufacturer states machine washable. Cool or warm cycle, mild detergent. Wash pads together rather than with clothes or bedding.

Never use

Fabric softener. It coats the polyester face and kills absorbency permanently. This is the single most common way people ruin a washable pad.

Drying

Air dry, or tumble on low at most. High heat can damage the TPU waterproof film, and once that goes the pad leaks.

Deodorising

A cup of white vinegar in the rinse works better than more detergent.
