Good to Know

Scratch boards mainly work on front nails. Back nails and dewclaws may still need trimming. Supervise use and replace the surface if it becomes worn.

Product in Action

See it working.

The drawer is the whole mechanism. Put a biscuit in, close it, and your dog works at the gritty surface to get at it, filing the front nails while they do. They set the pace, which is the opposite of how clippers usually go.

How to Use

How to use it.

1

Bait the drawer

Slide the drawer out, put a biscuit in and close it. Let your dog watch you do it the first few times.

2

Let them dig

Encourage a front paw onto the gritty surface. Reward the first scratch, however small. The filing happens as a side effect of the digging.

3

Keep it short

A minute or two at a time is plenty. Check nail length regularly. A board works on front nails, so back nails and dewclaws still need trimming.

Ready when you are.

Care & Cleaning

How to keep it in good order, as the manufacturer states it.

Keep it dry

Paulownia is a light, open-grained wood. Wipe the frame with a barely damp cloth and dry it straight away rather than washing it, soaking will swell the board and lift the abrasive.

The drawer

Tip out crumbs after each session and wipe it dry. Damp treat residue is what makes a drawer start to smell.

The surface

Brush the grit clear of dust and nail filings with a dry brush. When it stops biting, the board has reached the end of its useful life. That is normal wear, not a fault.

Storage

Flat and indoors. Left somewhere damp, a wooden board will warp.
